General NewsI'm writing this on a shiny new Dell Vostro 1400! I actually got it on Tuesday, but I've been too busy playing with it to post. It's a nice machine. A bit thick and heavy for a 14 inch laptop, but it makes up for that by being solidly built and providing good performance options for the price.

I got it with vista business rather than XP, mostly because XP is easier to come by. Apparently it's available free from uni. And because I want to be cutting edge. Can you guess what I installed alongside vista? Linux of course! Ubuntu Hardy Heron, to be specific. It's pre-release, but hey, so is vista in my opinion.

    Here are the specs:
    2ghz core duo
    3Gb ram
    Geforce 8400M GS
    160Gb hard drive
    DVD writer
    14.1 inch wide-screen truelife display
    Intel wireless N
    Bluetooth
    9 cell battery
    Stuff I forgot

Came with a bluetooth mouse (which I've fallen in love with, touchpads are annoying) and a bag, both free, which was nice.

Setting up the vista and ubuntu dual boot was... interesting. Could have been smoother (read: it took all weekend). First I reinstalled vista to a smaller (30Gb) partition, and destroyed dell media direct in the process. There was an interesting phase where no matter what button I pressed it would attempt to fire up media direct and fail. Unbeknownst to me, at some point during this phase, media direct created another partition over the top of the one it already had. Apparently it's known to do such things, and has killed peoples linux installs in the process. I'm not too keen on having a kill linux button, so I left it with it's partition (after all, what's 3gig for a little peace of mind?).

The next phase of the process was installing ubuntu. I had some fun with gparted failing to work because of the overlapping partitions. Eventually fixed it by deleting the partition with fdisk. Set up 3 logical partitions for linux, 10gig for /, 4.5 for swap and the rest for home. You'll note I gave linux about half the space I did vista. I hope that judgment was about right. The plan is to install an ext2 driver in vista and share my home drive between the two, although I haven't tested that yet. I thought it would be nicer than a crusty old fat32 partition. The installation went pretty much without a hitch from there. I really like the live install CD, it's great to be able to google things while you install. Wireless and bluetooth worked out of the box, saving many a headache no doubt.

The graphics driver was an ordeal all on it's own. Only because I'm a linux n00b, but still. Ubuntu very nicely detected my geforce 8400M and suggested a proprietary driver for it. So I installed it, rebooted, and everything seemed fine. It even changed the font to make it seem like it had done something. But it didn't give me any hardware acceleration. So, I tried downloading a linux driver from nvidia. Unfortunately I got the wrong one, and spent ages breaking my X config, reading log files and generally going mildly insane. Then finally I found the right driver, installed it and bam! The way it's meant to be played! Oh wait, it's a business lappy. Um, the way it's meant to be visualised!

Please excuse the quality of the photos, my phone camera was all I had on hand. I didn't get the camera with my laptop, and if I had I would've needed a mirror anyway ;).
